Lady Gaga and Joaquin Phoenix Get Up Close and Personal As ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ Wraps

It looks like Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga have had their last laugh—for now. Joker: Folie à Deux director Todd Phillips posted on Instagram that filming has officially wrapped on the musical The Joker sequel starring the Oscar-winning pair as DC villains Arthur Fleck and Harley Quinn. But before the camera stopped rolling, Phillips snapped a few pictures of the Joker couple and shared them on social media.

“That’s a wrap,” wrote Phillips in an Instagram caption featuring a close up shot of Gaga and Phoenix. “Thanks to these two (+ the entire cast) and the BEST crew that the film industry has to offer. From top to bottom. Gonna crawl into a cave now (edit room) and put it all together.” In the first photo he shared, we see Gaga’s Harley Quinn staring blankly at the camera, sporting a blonde bob with bangs and wearing lightly smudged makeup reminiscent of a clown, complete with a red lip. She looks empty inside and capable of, well anything. Gaga posted the same photo on Twitter with a fiery heart, clapboard, and joker emojis and the  caption, “That’s a wrap, Harleen.”

In the second photo in the carousel, Phillips shares a photo of Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck, the emotionally disturbed aspiring stand up and professional clown who becomes the titular DC villain and, eventually, Batman’s number one nemesis. In the photo, Phoenix is looking up and away from the camera towards the sky, with a full face of clown make up—red mouth, red nose, white face, green under eye shadow—and his now classic red suit and green tie combo.

Joker: Folie à Deux is more than a year away from release, but it’s having a big week. It’s been hard to miss the clips of Lady Gaga dancing and singing an arrangement of “That’s Entertainment”—a song memorably performed by Fred Astaire, among others— while dancing down the iconic “Joker stairs” located on west 167th Street in the Bronx.  At the end of the clip, a slew of police officers flood the stairs as Gaga—or, Harleen— belts out the final notes.

Phillips’ The Joker premiered in 2019 and was a critical and commercial success, earning the distinction as the highest-earning R-rated movie of all time, grossing $1.07 billion worldwide. It was nominated for 11 Oscars, winning two: best score for Hildur Gudnadottir, who won for best score, and best actor for Phoenix. Joker: Folie à Deux is set to hit theaters on October 4th, 2024.
