Police arrest man, 54, on suspicion of murdering Lewisham girl Maureen Gitau, 24

A person has been arrested on suspicion of the homicide of a lady who has not been seen since December 5 as she left her south London house. 

Maureen Gitau, 24, was reported lacking by her household on Saturday, December 10, 5 days after she was final seen leaving her home on Evelyn Road, Lewisham. 

Police confirmed Ms Gitau and the person in custody knew one another. 

There haven’t been any constructive sightings of Ms Gitau since December 5 regardless of public appeals for help.

Native officers introduced within the Met Police’s Specialist Crime Command for help earlier than they took over the investigation when Ms Gitau’s disappearance seemed more and more severe. 

Detectives arrested a 54-year-old man on Friday, December 30 on suspicion of Ms Gitau’s homicide. 

He’s nonetheless in police custody.  

Detective Chief Inspector Kate Blackburn of the Met’s Specialist Crime Command is main the investigation. 

She stated: ‘This arrest is a major growth in what’s now being handled as a homicide investigation.

‘While we have now not situated Maureen’s physique we have now cause to consider she has come to severe hurt and has possible been killed.

‘Maureen’s household have been knowledgeable and they are going to be supported by specialist officers.

‘This information has come as a horrible shock. My ideas, and people of my staff, are with them at this very tough time.

‘We’re asking anybody who knew Maureen and who noticed her on Monday, December 5, within the Deptford space, or anybody who believes they’ve info that would help our investigation, to name 101, giving the reference 3230985/22.’
