Controversial Senator Kyrsten Sinema Prepares To Run as an Independent

Arizona Senator Kyrsten Sinema is preparing to run again for Senate in 2024 — but this time as an independent.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the Democrat-turned-independent’s team met in Phoenix earlier this week, where, in a slideshow, they discussed the timeline for her potential run, including when they would need to finalize campaign staff and when they would need to complete poll research.

“Kyrsten is an independent voice for Arizona. As Arizona’s senior senator, she’s committed to ignoring partisan politics, shutting out the noise, and delivering real results helping everyday Arizonans build better lives for themselves and their families,” one slide read.

Sinema’s office declined to confirm details about the meeting to the WSJ.

Sinema left the Democratic party last year, days after Georgia Senator Raphael Warnock won his runoff election, securing control of the Senate for the Democrats. “I have joined the growing numbers of Arizonans who reject party politics by declaring my independence from the broken partisan system in Washington,” she wrote in a local Arizona media outlet.

“Like a lot of Arizonans, I have never fit perfectly in either national party,” she continued.  “Becoming an independent won’t change my work in the Senate; my service to Arizona remains the same.”

Following Sinema’s announcement, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre wrote in a statement: “Senator Sinema has been a key partner on some of the historic legislation President Biden has championed over the last 20 months.” She added, “We understand that her decision to register as an independent in Arizona does not change the new Democratic majority control of the Senate, and we have every reason to expect that we will continue to work successfully with her.”

As Sinema shifts to the right, if the last election was any indicator, her state appears to be tipping to the left. Her fellow Arizona Senator Mark Kelly, a Democrat, defeated Republican Blake Masters by more than five points, while Democrat Katie Hobbs defeated Trump’s pick, firebrand Kari Lake, for the governor’s seat by 17,000 votes.

Lake—despite never conceding in the last election—has hinted at running for Senate in 2024. If that’s true, she may have just earned her first competitor on Friday, as Pinal County Sheriff Mark Lamb is poised to announce his candidacy for Arizona’s race next week.

Meanwhile, on the Democratic side, Arizona Rep. Ruben Gallego announced that he’s running for Sinema’s seat. “I’m better for this job than Kyrsten Sinema because I haven’t forgotten where I came from,” the congressman said in January.
